Phnom Kulen National Park sits about 50 km north of Siem Reap. It is the most sacred mountain in Cambodia. Its peaks rise 487 meters above the flat rice fields. In 802 AD, King Jayavarman II was crowned here and declared independence from Java. That event started the Khmer empire, which later built Angkor Wat. Today, you find the reclining Buddha of Preah Ang Thom near the top, the country’s largest such statue. The mountain also feeds several waterfalls that drop off red sandstone cliffs into clear jungle pools.
Preah Dak Village rests at the base of Phnom Kulen. Most days, women tap sugar palms at sunrise and then boil the sap in big iron pots over wood fires. The result is sticky, sweet palm sugar, a local staple. The village also has a small primary school, where 60 to 100 kids study each morning.
Preah Ang Thom Pagoda sits near the top of Phnom Kulen. It houses a giant reclining Buddha carved into the living sandstone boulder. Pilgrims come here from every province. The monk blessing ceremony uses holy water, a white thread, and a short Pali chant to send you safe travels.
Beng Mealea Temple lies about 40 km east of Siem Reap, just past Phnom Kulen. It was built in the same style and roughly the same time as Angkor Wat. It never got a full restoration. Instead, jungle roots, moss, and fallen stones took over. It is a working ruin. You walk on wooden planks over broken walls, with no ropes and no crowd.
Street 60 Market runs along National Road 6 in central Siem Reap. From about 5pm onward, it fills with grilled skewers, sugar cane juice, mango sticky rice, and Khmer rock music. It is loud, real, and 100 percent local.

8:00 am to 8:30 am – Hotel Pickup, Ride to Preah Dak Village
Your guide rings you at the lobby between 8:00 and 8:15. We load your towels, your swimsuit, your sunscreen, and your water bottle. Then we drive 30 minutes north through rice fields and sugar palms to Preah Dak village.
8:30 am to 10:00 am – Preah Dak Village: Palm Sugar, Palm Cake, and the Give-Back
You stop at a family cafe that has run for three generations. You watch them climb a palm tree, cut the flower, and catch the dripping sap in a bamboo jar. Then they boil the sap in an open iron pot until it turns into thick, dark sugar.
You taste warm palm sugar on fresh sticky rice (called “num krok”). It smells like caramel and tastes like brown sugar with a smoky twist.
Next, you buy 2 boxes of palm cakes for yourself. Then we hand 5 more boxes to the local primary school. You walk in, you wave, you pass out sweets. The kids say “awkun” (thank you) and laugh a lot. This part alone is worth the trip.
10:00 am to 11:00 am – Transfer to Phnom Kulen Mountain
We drive 1 hour uphill on a paved jungle road. You see wild monkeys, swings of orchids, and little wooden homes on red dirt. Your guide points out how palm sugar turns into rum, and how the Khmer Rouge used this mountain as a last base in 1979.
11:00 am to 2:30 pm – Phnom Kulen: 3 Waterfall Views, Swim, Pagoda, and Monk Blessing
You arrive at Phnom Kulen National Park. You buy your entry ticket at the gate. The ticket money goes to the government park fund for rangers and road repair..
Then we move on foot to Preah Ang Thom Pagoda. You climb the lion stairs and stand at the giant reclining Buddha carved into the rock face. A real monk in saffron robes sits you down, ties a white string around your wrist, sprinkles holy water on your head, and chants a short Pali prayer for safe travels. A small donation is included. You can add more if you wish.
We stop for lunch at a family-run Khmer restaurant on the mountain. Order from the a la carte menu. Options include chicken amok, fish curry, fried rice, and fresh fruit shakes. Vegetarian friendly on request.
2:30 pm to 3:20 pm – Transfer to Beng Mealea
We drive 40 minutes east on a quiet country road. You pass lotus ponds, water buffalo, and small roadside pagodas.
3:20 pm to 5:00 pm – Beng Mealea “Jungle Temple”
We park at the Beng Mealea ticket office. You buy your entry ticket, and we drive 1 km more to the temple gate.
Beng Mealea looks like Angkor Wat decided to quit and let the jungle win. Trees grow through the roof. Roots crawl over carved gods. Stone blocks lie where they fell 800 years ago. You walk on raised wooden walkways that the French survey team built in 2010. There are no ropes, no guards, no loud crowds. You sit on a mossy wall and hear only birds and dripping water.
Your guide shows you the hidden gallery, the lotus towers, and the famous “crocodile tree” growing out of the inner sanctuary. Photographers love this stop because the soft late afternoon light turns the moss a deep green.
5:00 pm to 6:00 pm – Transfer to Siem Reap and Street 60 Market
We ride 1 hour back to Siem Reap town. We stop at the famous Street 60 night market, which just opened at 5pm. You see vendors light up their grills and lay out sugar cane, grilled frog, fried crickets, mango sticky rice, and coconut shakes. Take photos. Try a snack. Buy a souvenir. We give you about 30 minutes here.
6:00 pm to 7:30 pm – Final Transfer to Your Hotel
We drive you straight back to your hotel lobby. The van has cool towels and cold water for the ride.
